Formal front garden

Formal front garden

The brief: Create year-round interest and structure to complement the beautiful early Victorian house and ancient church opposite. Screen the view of the nearby house.

Evergreen and and seasonal planting sits softly against the wall of the garden, and soft mounds of evergreens planted up against the house merge the house and garden. A beautiful Norway maple (Acer platinoides)was re-shaped and liberated from overgrown surroundings, and a multi-stemmed Betula utilis var  jaquemontii was added to complete the screening. Wide borders against the walls and alongside the path were filled with evergreens and seasonal herbaceous plants and bulbs, and tall supports added for clematis at intervals along the borders.
