Italianate COURTYARD garden, London

SV copy Rough Survey, Staverly Rd

OXFORD GARDEN PARTNERS were asked to design a garden to complement the complete renovation of a villa-style property in west London.

The owner loves Italy, and she also wanted her new garden to reflect the Italianate style of nearby Chiswick House. At the same time she wanted to retain the existing hawthorn trees in each corner of the garden.

Our solution was to design a simple courtyard, using a grey reconstituted stone which mimicked the Portland stone used at Chiswick House, but was priced within client's budget. We've added some formal clipped hedges which define one of the corners of the dining terrace, and the path to it, and a parterre which adds interest at both ground level and as viewed from the first floor. These formal elements are complemented by looser sun and shade planting in the remaining areas of the garden.
